My latest purchase, something that I really shouldn’t have bought, the Parrot AR.Drone:
A pretty sturdy, programmable, wi-fi controlled, quad-propeller flying object with cameras and sensors on board.
I had to borrow an iPod to try out the thing, since my Android-powered HTC Dream is a little slow to handle the example application, which is not optimized, and my Linux laptop didn’t want to connect to the drone (Closed wireless NIC drivers being the primary reason), but it flies very nicely, stable and easy, a eleven years old kid could pilot it without crashing… Actually an eleven years old boy (my brother) did fly it; and he – unlike me – avoided crashing…

Un quadricottero (velivolo a quattro eliche) piuttosto resistente, programmabile, controllato via wi-fi, con telecamere e sensori a bordo.
Ho dovuto chiedere in prestito un iPod per provare se funzionava, visto che il mio HTC Dream con Android è troppo lento per gestire l’applicazione di esempio, che non è ottimizzata, e il mio portatile con linux non riusciva a collegarsi al drone (principalmente a causa dei drivers della scheda wireless), ma vola veramente bene, stabile e semplice, un ragazzino di undici anni potrebbe pilotarlo… Anzi, un ragazzino di undici anni (mio fratello) l’ha pilotato, e lui – al contrario di me – è riuscito a non schiantarlo…

Haha, calling this a “surveillance drone” is a big leap, it’s pretty much a toy for geeks, and the cameras are low quality, not absolutely viable for surveillance duty.
What’s that Orwell line about?
It is basically a toy surveillance drone, isn’t it?
Speaking of which, the Orwell line should be obvious. If you didn’t live on an asteroid in the past 10-15 years…
whatever, I’m not going to argue with you about what you believe, and I believe that thinking this has something to do with Orwell’s pictured situation is a bit overrated, if not paranoid, but as I said, whatever, you’re entitled to believe what you want, I’m trying to learn how this thing works because I love meddling with tech stuff.
I don’t know if I have to start explaining you about how the actual world is even worse than what Orwell wrote about or – maybe better – first I teach you about those things called “jokes”. :’D
